iphoto lost all photos - request to server failed?

I have a 2011 intel iMac. It is the (supposedly) powerful 3.1ghz i5, and i upgraded the RAM to 12 Gig. Before buying this machine I had a 2008 iMac and LOVED it, it was superb. But this machine is SLOWER than that one was?! I am running OSX lion, iLife 09 and iWork 11. I am having a nightmare with this machine, it hands constantly, i only have a few apps open and still it can take 5-10 seconds (beachballing) for finder to draw my files when i open a folder. This can't be right. I have reloaded the entire machine from scratch twice by cloning files off and then MANUALLY rebuilding it (not using Migrate Assistant to ensure to i was not bringing any bad data or bugs across from old installation or old machine).

It is slow as a dog, way slower than my old iMac which had a mere 2 Gig of Ram! If i open more than 10 browser tabs in Safari it goes so slow I can't use the internet. The machine crashes at least twice a week and just hands so I have to force shutdown, and my latest error is iPhoto just lost ALL my photos, 5 years worth and gives the error "Request to server failed" but says nothing else of any use. I am hoping to recover them with TimeMachine but wait and see on that score as nothing seems to be right with this machine so no doubt TM will play up as well.

I have VMWare Fusion installed, latest version. It does seem slower when running that, but it still crashed and plays up when that is not running so I am sure that is not the source of any problems, it just makes them a bit worse due to processor usage.

Is it possible to get an iMac diagnostically checked (hardware) at an Apple store? It is still under warranty this machine, but I can't drop it off at a store without wiping all my data (clone) to external drive, because I have confidential information stored on it which I can't leave on if the machine leaves my office.

Appreciate it if anyone with any similarly bad experiences of newer iMacs could chip in and suggest any ideas. I struggled to afford to buy this machine, and thought it would sky rocket my performance and speed after my old machine started to get slow due to age, but even at its worst it was never this bad. I am now a very very disappointed Apple lover, ex-lover?!

One final point I should mention, I upgraded the RAM myself, using proper stuff from Crucial. I read that it didn't matter what order the RAM cards were fitted in, is that true or should I try moving them around?

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 12 Gig RAM, 3.1ghw i5

Oh, you didn't try that yet?

Definitely do, but whether clone is a good idea or not is up in the air, I guess if you don't have any backups I might try it, but with the Partition map messed up it's hard to tell what off ramp it's going to take... picture vandals moving street signs & house numbers around in the middle of the night... and you only have a piece of paper with the street & address on it.

Oh I understand what you mean now, thanks. Yes I have a clone in the safe from 2-4 weeks ago, and I had TimeMachine running constantly, but it doesn't seem to have been working properly as it only goes back 10 days, and no idea how reliable the info is in light of this problem now found.

Could this partition map be the resaon my iPhoto Library is badly unhinged?

Crikey, glad I mentioned it!! Thanks so much for your kind and generous help, I was really at the end of my tether. I had my first iMac for 3 years of virtually around the clock heavy use, and was simply amazed at the stability and enjoyment of using it, after years of using PCs with hair-pulling days every week!

I was so impressed that as soon as i had more money i invested in the latest model, much more powerful, and upgraded the RAM to 12GB, my mac addict friend said it should be snappy as **** and will be faster than anything I have ever used. It has been slow and buggy since day one. I reloaded (reinstalled OS) twice, which cost me weeks of work in my business, and I was totally lost with what to do next.

So.... this problem I am going to try to fix, is it a hardware or software issue as I am a bit confused what the actual problem is, i.e. is it bad sectors or something like that, or the software which reads the HD which is at fault?

Thanks again, will report back after attempting a repair.

Thanks, I dont know if i have Applecare. If this is something that you have to purchase, and doesn't come by default with a new product, then the answer is no.
I actually bought this machine off a seller on Ebay, but dont fret as i checked it all out and have had it confirmed by apple that it is covered under the standard 1yr warranty (serial number checked)

surely thats sufficient to get it to an apple store?

The problem i have is that I can't take it to a store and leave it with them without moving all my data off it. I can do that, but will the problem still be evident to them without my data on it?

😀

Well I am gonna try one more time. I have never had to REPAIR before, I just tried a reinstall, so maybe I didn't notice this problem until now. I will repair once and maybe reinstall once more. If it is not zappy like it should be after that I will go to Apple. Thanks again for all your help, I will report back after the repair which i am doing tomorrow 🙂

Right.........

I booted machine holding down OPTION ('Alt' here in UK) but it did NOT give me recovery HD as a choice to boot into. I read that this should happen.

I then booted with CMD-R and it did thankfully boot straight into recovery partition. I ran D.U. and did Repair Disk on internal volume which went through in seconds and came back everything fine. It said it was all perfect and everything had been repaired or verified to be good.

So I then rebooted as normal, and ran this repair again from DU when booted from internal drive, and this time......... here is what I got...........

Your symptoms, as others have noted, are disturbing. The partition map is what the operating system uses to find files (and pieces of files -- files are not stored contiguously on the disk). Not sure why one type of Disk Utility run finds nothing wrong and the other finds something wrong, but that's indicative of something wrong. By the way, are you using File Vault? (If so, that complicates all this to some degree.)

I have read that running disk repair/verify from an externally booted disk or from the recovery disk is more reliable than running disk utility "in place" while booted from the disk in question. However in conjunction with your other problematic symptoms, clearly something is wrong.

I also noted earlier that this is an ebay-purchased computer. Don't take this the wrong way, but often ebay is where people unload things that aren't working right for them. I wonder if the previous owner encountered the same issues and decided simply to sell the machine so someone else could try to deal with them ... (like you)

Given that it is from ebay, have you checked the hardware of this Mac with the Hardware Test program that is on the recovery disk? That could be a source of the problems, hopefully not.

I think your best bet is to make two backups (that's for redundancy) of your user folder contents. Try to make sure you can find and browse those files from the backups. Then I would obtain Disk Warrior and run it to try to fix any problems. Disk Warrior will find and fix things that Apple utilities cannot. If that works, you might be ready to go. If Disk Warrior says things are fine, that would then point to either hardware problems inside the Mac, or a damaged system installation. For the latter, you could try the latest combo update reapplying it, or a fresh installation of the OS. If that doesn't cure what you have, I'd completely reformat the disk and reinstall a fresh operating system and software that you have, and then restore your user folder from your backup(s).

If you have file vault turned on, I'd turn if off for now until everything is working right again.

One last thing -- when you go to Apple for test/diagnosis, they often will end up doing a complete reformat of the disk, so it's extra important to backup your files as best you can. If the partition map is broken, you may have trouble finding and backing up all your files, but I'm not totally convinced that your partitiion map is broken, you have contradictory indications.

I think your iPhoto issues have to wait until you get a reliable system running. The iPhoto and Safari programs might be damaged, for instance, it's hard to say. Your photos are physically there, they are not lost, but the iPhoto database may be having trouble finding them. They can be re-imported into a new iPhoto Library but don't do that until your system is stable. You can see the actual photo files by right clicking on the iPhoto Library to Show Package Contents, and then you'll see some folders, the one called "Originals" has your original photo files, other folders will have changed or modified photo files. They are all there, but the database may be damaged and thus unable to locate the photo files. That can be fixed in a variety of ways, but not worth doing until yur system is fixed.
