You can scan from the preview app. Just execute preview, then click "file" on the top menu bar, select "Import from Scanner". If your printer is attached via ethernet or wifi, add the following steps above, click on "Include Network Devices", then again select "file" from the top menu bar, then click on "Import from Scanner", and this time you should see your network attached printer listed on the right, just click on it to start the scan.

is it a printer? or a printer scanner? if it is a scanner or all in one, Epson includes a CD with their scanners with scan software. Install it. BUT, some OSX epson updates put the scan feature into your print/scanner section in system Preferences

make sure printer is on

menu>System Preferences>Print&Scan>open scanner> from here do what you need to scan

should look like this:

You may not need to install Epson's proprietary software. I certainly didn't, I just plugged my Epson all-in-one in and it just worked. Once you have verified that the scanner is installed, as per Soto's instructions above, then there's a couple of ways to scan:

1. Open Applications -> Image Capture; the rest should be obvious if you've done scanning before.

2. Open Applications -> Preview; drop down the 'File' menu and select 'Import from scanner'.

I'm running 10.7.4 and I just downloaded all the newest drivers from Epson. How do I get that nifty scan button? Thank you

Did you repair permissions and restarted your computer after the installation?

Have you contacted Epson? Read the user manual?

Thanks for the ideas. I hadn't repaired permissions, just did so, restarted again but still no print/scan buttons. I had already read the manual which basically said check with Apple for downloads. I haven't had the heart to actually call and sit on hold with Epson (ugh) so if you have any other ideas I'd be grateful. The other mac in the house which is on the same version (10.7.4) has the buttons. (?)

Many thanks again for any help.

If none of these suggestions are working for you, you have no other alternative but to call Epson tech support. It's their product and the supports techs are very Mac savy.

In all my years of owning Epson printers and scanners, their tech support have been above par in providing step by step instructions over the phone. They will hand hold you until your problem has been resolved. If the problem cannot be resolved, Epson will replace your printer/scanner.

OK, I called. I wasn't on hold as long as I thought I would be but they were no help. They knew nothing about any buttons in the Preference print/scan window. They had me download Epson's scan utility (which I already hated from my last printer and then they 'taught' me how to use it.

But no solution for the missing buttons. They said it was an Apple issue, not theirs. :-(

Hi Soto,

It's an Epson Artisan 837. I think it has to be something with my Macbook Pro, not the printer. The other Mac in the house (an Air) has the buttons. Both Macs are on the same version software with current updates, 10.7.4.

So wierd that one would have it and the other not. I can't see any settings that are different.

Any help much appreciated, thank you
