Q: Seagate GoFlex Desk USB 3.0

This is not a question.  Just FYI.  It took me days of screwing around with the my new Seagate GoFlex Desk 2 TB USB 3.0 drive (hooked up to a 2009 iMac running OS X 10.7.3 and only has USB 2.0) which I am using as a Time Machine backup to figure out why it does not work.  Finally found the answer in Seagate's own forums.  Apparently Seagate drivers for the USB 3.0 is not compatible with a Mac with an USB 2.0.  A number of problems: finder lock up, Time Machine not able to find the disk, once found, the backup hangs at "preparing for backup", etc.  The solution is to use Find Any File (shareware) to find Seagate drivers (I found and deleted all files that contained Seagate) and delete them all (then empty the trash, eject the HD and restart, then reconnect the HD) and let Mac use its own drivers.  Works find now.  If you are planning on buying a Seagate USB 3.0 drive, be aware.  Costco is selling the 2 TB drive for $109, which is a great price but make sure you do the above after reformatting the drive to HFS+ format or it won't work with your Mac.  I can't believe Seagate has not said much about this at all.  Thank God for forums.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 14 GB RAM

Thanks for the tip, but apparently this means you installed Seagate Drivers when you got it?

I had the exact same problem. AND, this was on a warranty replacement drive. I was beginning to regret having purchased it. Let's see how this works out. Thanks for your research.

i was running two USB 3.0 GoFlex Desk on my 2010 MacBookPro (latest Lion) without any Problems - one was for Data and the other for Timemaschine.

Now, with a new Retina MacBookPro and Mountain Lion i was running into problems.. from time to time the Disk don't wakeup after "sleep".. its like the disk are not there anymore. I had to power off/on the disk.... For me it looks like the USB 3.0 Problem is not fixed to 100%.

I can confirm same issue with my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2012 (not retina display). I am running OS X 10.8 ML

My GoFlex Portable drive over USB 3.0 goes off to sleep and sometimes, I just have to force eject/unplug the drive and plug it back on for mac to recognise it!!

Oh but if I connect the drive over Firewire or USB 2.0, it just works fine!!!

Wow, thank you, have been undergoing serious problems for the last few days.

Returned first Seagate HDD as it seemed faulty. Second one continued with problems, i thought it was my startup disc, bought Diskwarrior and it fixed everything for about an hour. Haven't been able to Shutdown or restart my imac with the Seagate drive connected, Finder would hang, had to reinstall from install disc, repair from install disk utility. finally when imac wouldn't even shut down i ripped out the offending drive as it seemed to be the epicentre and it instantly shut down, perfect back to normal.

What a load of rubbish these drives are, why don't they know about these things? PCWorld knew nothing of it, no surprise there, they don't even know what RPM the drives operate at.

    Great!!!!!

    Thank you very much!

I have been working on this problem for almost one year since I bought this hard drive.

Finally the problem has been solved.

    It was very helpful.

Now I have done my first back up without "frozen" there any more.

Hope other people could see this when they meet the same problem.

Now my issue is "should I buy a thunderbolt connector or not?" !
