Are you running Boot Camp or a VM such as Parallels or VMware Fusion? What version of Windows do you have? I know you can use Alt-Print Screen in XP but I've never tried it (I have no idea what the "Print Screen" key would be on a Mac keyboard - maybe someone else does?)

It's something similar in Windows 7, as well, using the PrtScn function. Try Googling it for your particular OS and maybe someone here knows if there's a way to use the Mac keyboard for PrtScn.

Oh, and I Googled the PrtScn funtion for Mac's - the solutions say to use the F13 key - and I don't have an F13 on my MacBook Pro!

Surprisingly, not a single mention has been made of Grab, the default screen capture application included in MacOS X and located in Utilities. Can capture the screen, a window or an arbitrary selection, with the grab saved in uncompressed TIFF format. Besides grabbing from Mac apps, I've had no problem doing the same from other OS's running on VMWare Fusion or Oracle VirtualBox.

Of course, if you're running the "gem" from Redmond via BootCamp, you will be constrained to the tools offered by the thing.

Sorry for my ignorance!!!

My Macbook doesnt run on parallels it was taken off, the OS is windows XP, so when i log on to my macbook i only ever see microsoft windows and software.

I need to do screen grabs when i am working in Photoshop - i make the kids helpsheets with info on.

I have looked at windows, start, all programs, assessories and there isnt an option for snipping tool.

So any keyboard shortcut would be great, if i get to the bottom of this i will be a very happy ladyd!! thanks

You're going to need to download and install a screen capture utility (there are many free options). This will let you do the screen capture with the application vs. having to use the Print Screen key. Some of them will still allow you to use the Print Screen key to launch the application, but they can also be manually launched:

When using an external keyboard, the F13 key is what you need, but I don't have mine handy right now so I cannot test what works to capture the entire Windows screen and what captures just the current window, but using just the keyboard of my 2011 MBP running Mountain Lion and Windows 7 Ultimate under VMWare Fusion , I use:

Command+Option+Fn+F12 to capture the current window

Alt+Fn+F12 to capture the entire Windows screen
