Q: i have a netgear router that I am trying to hook up to my emac and I keep on getting connection errors messages on the emac. why?

I recently received an eMac as a gift from a friend. I am having some problems setting it up. First, for some reason, I cannot get my osX disks to install onto my eMac. the eMac tells me the install disk is not bootable. Why would that be? So, I have os 9.2 installed on the eMac. I have the eMac connected to a netgear router, and when I set up all the ip settings in the eMac, I get connection errors. I do not know why. I can easily hook up any windows computer to a router, but when I try to connect an Apple Computer to a router or an ethernet modem, I always get connection errors. Why? What am I doing wrong? In the Apple System Profiler, the eMac tells me that it cannot identify the router. Why would that be? Do I need a special eMac driver for my netgear router? I have tried to find such a driver, but am having no success. I need help! Can someone please help me? I really want to use this eMac! But if I cannot get it set up for the internet, it is going into the junkyard!  I really don't want that!

eMac, Mac OS 9.2.x, driver for netgear router?

    Hello Jeffrey,

    Are you always using Ethernet when connecting to the Router, or Airport/Wifi?

    Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems & Ethernet problems...

    If Wifi what encryption does the Router use?

    I am only using an ethernet cable. My eMac does not have an airport card installed in it.  The computer keeps the day, date, etc. current, so I don't think the the PRAM battery is bad.  When I have the eMac connected to my ethernet cable modem through the router, the OS 9.2 does not recognize the router.  When I connect the eMac directly through the cable modem with an ethernet cable, the OS 9.2 still says it does not recognize any router, even though there is no router in the connection.  Could it be that OS X 10.2 would solve my problem?  Also, I live in Helena, Montana, and there are no authorized Apple dealers or Apple support in my area.  I have no idea where to go to get OS X 10.2 install disks for this eMac.  I would like to put more memory and a bigger hard drive into the eMac as well.  And getting a new PRAM battery would be nice, too.  But where can I purchase these things?

    Also, I contacted my internet provider, Bresnan ( now known as Optimum), and they had no suggestions for either.  I have set up many DOS, Windows, and Linux based computers to the internet, and I have NEVER had ANY success connected ANY APPLE computer to the internet, EVER!

    I looked at the Apple System Profiler to look at all the settings to base my internet setup on.  When using an ethernet connection, I don't need to set any encryption on the router, right?  I don't remember setting up any encryption on the router.  I use the same router to connect my Windows 7 computer, and when I log into my router through 192.168.1.1, I don't ever remember ever setting up any encryption on the router.  I would think I would remember setting encryption on the router.

    Encryption wouldn't matter except for Wifi.

    While 10.2 might help, there's not much you can do on the Internet these days with less than 10.4.11

    Tiger Requirements...

    To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:

        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor

        * Built-in FireWire

        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)

        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation

        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

    As far as Memory, that's sort of easy, find your eMac here...

    As far as Hard Drive, it's not easy to replace the Internal drive, I'd maybe suggest an external Firewire drive to boot from...
