Q: MacBook Pro Activates, hard drive never turns on.

My MacBook Pro is doing something weird that I cannot find in the troubleshooting.  Whenever I turn it on, it makes the weird mechanical sound like it always does before the chime and the little white light on the front button lights up.  But the chime never comes, the screen never turns on, and the little light on the front goes dim and stays that way.  There's no sound of fans or hard drives spinning, just that initial mechanical sound.  I just shut the computer down normally with no problems, and now it will not turn on.  I've tried resetting the SMC, I've tried both just the power cord and just the battery.  It's interesting because I can then use the power button to turn it off again (the dimmed front light will turn off).  It's almost like it's stuff in sleep mode.  Anybody ever deal with this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
