My sony pd170 will not work with my macbook pro

I purchased a Macbook Pro earlier this year. I have a Sony PD170 Camera and I am not able to get it to work with iMovie or FCP X. I purchase a 800 firewire cable with a mini 4 pin so it would attach to the camera. Am I missing something?

With the camcorder OFF, connect the camcorder's DV port to the Mac's firewire port. Power up the camcorder and put it in "Play" or "Play/Edit" mode.

Launch iMovie. Under "File" select Import or Capture - it depends on the version of iMovie you are using. Follow the prompt. The video will import.

This is the same for ALL miniDV tape based camcorders and not specific to the PD170.

Hopefully you are recording standard definition DV format to the miniDV tape and not DVCAM format. iMovie won't understand DVCAM format. Only DV format (and HDV over firewire and AVCHD/MTS over USB).
