Export the photo, open it in Preview, add the text.

This was enormously helpful.

There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

You could try to nstall the free "BorderFX for iPhoto" plug-in - it will allow you to add text to the border of a photo, or to place it directly onto the photo: Download from here:

This is WAY EASIER than some of you make it.

Open FINDER, then PICTURES, then iPHOTO... find the pic you want, click it... text edit, colors, baloon text inserts, the works are all there.

Apart from the fact that you're "instructions" are incomplete, how is that easier than using Preview?

If you are saying to open the iPhoto library and make changes to photos in it it will not work adn will corrupt yoru iPhoto library

Never make any changes to the content or sturcture of the iPHoto library except using iphoto

The instructions are as clear as pie, assuming the person reading it knows that once then person reading it has a basic understanding of editing icons.

It is true however that the changes I have made using this method are irreversible… I do not know exactly why that happens because the program never asked me to save the changes once I had added text to the photos

That's a pretty murky pie you're serving:

Open FINDER, then PICTURES, then iPHOTO... find the pic you want, click it...

Okay, at this point I can now see the Photo at full size in the iPhoto Window.

So how do you get from there to

text edit, colors, baloon text inserts, the works are all there.

Because there isn't any TextEdit option in any iPhoto Menu.

And again, how is this easier than using Preview when set as an external editor?

The downside with iBorder is that it forces you to save it as a new image file and then reimport it back into iPhoto and a new import. Using one of the 3rd party editors or Preview as the external exitor in iPhoto you can add text to a photo and have it saved as a modified photo like it's done with iPhoto itself.

You CAN add text to IPhoto 08. I just did it based on a Macworld.com post. Here is how to do it step by step;

• Take your photo
• drag your photo out of IPhoto onto your desktop(I have the 08 version-To see your version of IPhoto- Open IPhoto, then look at the top left corner of your Mac screen next to black Apple logo, click on "Iphoto", click on "About Iphoto" then window that pops up tells you your version in the title).
• You drag the photo by going to the photos section of IPhoto-left click on the photo once until it's highlighted with a yellow border-left click again and HOLD DOWN your left click and drag the photo to you desktop (while dragging you will see a red and green button appear.
• Once on the des top look up at the top of your screen for the menu bar again for the "TOOLS" menu.
• Scroll down for the "ANNOTATE" option and Choose TEXT
• Your cursor will now change to a + sign. put your cursor over the area of photo you want to add text to and LEFT CLICK and then DRAG your + sign left to right to open your text box.
• Once you have your rectangle text box open-You will see directly above the photo an "A" Click on the A to open your font menu to choose size/type of font. Type your font!
• You can also change the color of your font by left clicking and holding your left mouse button and scrolling over your typed (this is called highlighting your text. Then choose the color of font you want. I chose white for my text as it was easiest to see.
• Click on file and then click SAVE
• NOTE: Once your done with your text BE SURE it's all EXACTLY correct because I haven't found a way to edit my text after it's saved!

So, no you can't add text to a photo in iPhoto, but you can in Preview.

Thanks for pointing that out to him. When I read it, I immediately thought, "What's up with this tip? I'm in Preview at this point."

I might also point out that, upon finishing this suggested procedure, your photo is sitting on your desktop now, not in iPhoto.
