QuickTime X (version 10.0) that comes with Snow Leopard only allows "full screen" recording. This means it can record whatever display resolution you've set.

When you scale down these large dimension files they become hard to view. Better to change the display resolution to the smallest size during recording.

QuickTime Player 10.1 is in Lion and it allows you to record only a portion of the screen. This makes much smaller file sizes and better recordings.

That would depend on how you're trying to display them on your Site and the detail required for your recording.

I would use 800X600 and then export using QuickTime Player Pro at 400X300 to sharpen the image.

There are two options for quality in the screen recording set up (Medium and High). Medium uses Photo-JPEG codec and High uses H.264. Medium quality actually makes much higher file sizes.
