bad monitor accuracy - burnt out whites

Hi There

I am really into photography and therefore rely on good image quality (display). Yesterday I remarked, that my macbook pro displays the picture worse than the one of my girlfriend (slightly newer model). We compared the monitor settings and had exactely the same (default settings).

My macbook shows part as purely white, that should not be - that's the main issue.

I tried to calibrate the monitor by hand, which made the accuracy even worse. My Ipad3 shows parts as good as my girlfriend's macbook and so does my ipod touch.

How can it be, that my monitor has simply worse display quality with the same settings - the display should be exactely the same... My operating system is OSX 10.6.8 and she has OSX Lion. Could this be the reason?

*and yes, we looked at the same picture ;-)

Thank you for your help!

greetings
