I want to record an external synth in Garage Band through the iPad headphone jack. I have a 3.5 mm male to male 35 mm cable running out of the synth into the iPad, but it won't record any audio. The garage band audio recorder and sampler only seem to work with the built in mic, and the guitar am recorder doesn't pick up any sound. Anybody know hiw I can accomplish this?
Not real familiar with the Bose, but it has a Master Analog Out and the GuitarJack2 has both a stereo line in and a 1/4 guitar in. With standard cables, it looks like you should have no problem getting the signal into the guitarjack2 plugged into the iPad.
The headphone jack is actually three channels: left out, right out and mic in. A standard stero cable can only pickup stereo audio out and doesn't come into contact with the mic channel in. Also, this mic channel is EQed and balanced for a voice mic. To get audio from your keyboard, it's best to use something like GuitarJack2 from Sonoma Wireworks. It brings in a nice flat stereo signal from the sync cable jack.
A regular 3.5 jack to jack won't cut it. You need something like this DIY iRig or a dedicated product.

when the cable is plugged into the ipad headphone jack from the aux outlet of my bose tonematch shouldnt the ipad mic switch off? If not it is hard to record individual tracks on my studio mini app
Wonderful, thank you for the explanation. So if i plugged a guitar jack 2 from my master out on the bose tonematch into the headphone jack of my ipad my studio mini app would be all set to record via the bose system with all the fx right?

You need a trrs to trs audio adapter. Is 4 band to 3 band. That's all. £20 off amazon
