my software won't update past iOS 4.3.1
Is there any chance that you actually have a 2nd generation iPod, which can ONLY update as far as iOS 4.3.1?

If it's 4.2.1 (NOT 4.3.1!), then, you have the 8GB model which isn't 3rd gen but 2nd gen.
haha possibly, although under devices it is listed as 3rd gen but on the back it has 2nd gen model number.. thank you 🙂

Yup, Apple have caused a lot of confusion when they continued selling the 2G 8GB model after introducing the third-gen series.
