Make sure you are trying to remove the SIM correctly, use this -> iPhone and iPad: How to remove the SIM card

This Apple article might help ya out with the activation problems -> iOS: Troubleshooting carrier activation issues

If it's still not working out for ya, setup service from here -> Service Answer Center - iPhone
