May 31, 2012 9:31 AM in response to vicki schonby modular747,Do you see a small lock icon with an arrow encircling it on the status bar, to the left of the battery meter? If so, the phone is in portrait lock mode. Double click the home button to show the "multitasking" apps bar, slide it to the right and touch the portrait lock icon (at the left) to unlock.
If you don't see the portrait lock icon on the status bar, reset the phone: press both the home and on/off buttons for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
FYI: "Turn sideways" means landscape mode.
FYI2: You can't have an iPhone 3G with iOS 5.1.1 as your profile says. The highest iOS installable on the 3G model is 4.2.1. Do you have an iPhone 3GS?
