Thank You!   I was actually able to use the "edit" button after this solution.

Thanks! This worked for me too with a slight variation on step 2 (try this if Edit is still grayed out at step 4)…

    2) Re-Launch the Mail app…

2a) Hit the home button twice to display cached apps running in the background.

2b) Scroll to the Mail app's thumbnail and swipe up on it to force quit it and remove it from the cache.

2c) Hit the Home button to return to the Home Screen.

       2d) Open the Mail app.

If Mail was running in the background still and hung on trying to send then the app did not realize you had activated Airplane mode and the Edit button in the Outbox was still grayed out. After re-launching Mail in airplane mode, a notification popped up staying there was no internet connection (this didn't happen when I launched the app without force quitting it first). After that I went back in to find the message in the Outbox in a failed status with the Edit button enabled, allowing me to complete the remaining steps.

As a side note, I believe the action that caused my hung message was emailing a PDF from within iBooks and deleting that PDF before Mail had finished sending the message. If you are sending large attachments then I would wait until the message is sent before deleting the file you attached to it. My assumption is that Mail does not cache the attachment before sending and hangs when the file being attached disappears mid-transmission.

Do you have any suggestions for if I cannot see the email in the outbox?  I tried sending a video via the mail app which blew up my storage.  Tried all these fixes and nothing has worked, probably because I cannot see the email sitting anywhere!   I even deleted the mail app and hard shut down my phone and the storage is still at the exact same level as before, even without adding my email account back in. The recipient never got the email so it must be sitting somewhere (invisible to me) clogging up my storage.  I need this space! Please help.

I had the same problem and did a lot of research. It all depends upon your system and what caused it exactly. But all of these are great and one definitely should work. Try them one at a time and good luck:

SOLUTION #0: EASIEST IF IT WORKS

no need to reset the iphone .. just close & restart the mail app (while in airplane mode) .. and it works .. thanks all!

    ----------------------------------------------------

SOLUTION #1 WHICH DID NOT WORK FOR ME (BUT IT IS QUITE SIMILAR TO #2)

    1) Put the iPhone in Airplane mode

    2) Open the Mail app

    3) Go to the Outbox

    4) Click Edit, click the circle next to the stuck message to select it

    5) Click Delete

    6) Take the iPhone out of Airplane mode

    7) Return to the Mail app.  :-)

    ----------------------------------------------------

SOLUTION #2 WHICH WORKED FOR ME!!!

    1) Put your iPhone/iPad in airplane mode

    2) Fully switch-off your phone

    3) Turn it back on

    4) When prompted enter your access code, but don't unlock your SIM

    5) Your iPhone/iPad is booted

    6) Go to your mail app

    7) Go to Outbox

    8) You should be able to click on edit in the top-right corner

    9) Click on the circle in front of your e-mail

    10) Delete

    ---only for a PHONE ---

You can reactivate cellular and wifi data at this point, turning off airplane mode should prompt you to enter your sim.

There are three methods that I found are really great, but the one that works depends upon what exactly caused it. Here they are and try one at a time until you hit success:

I also had a message that was trying to send for two weeks with a non-active edit button even on airplane mode! But finally I fixed the problem by leaving it in airplane and quitting the mail app and then restarting mail. When I opened the outbox this time the edit button was highlighted! I deleted the message and solved the problem!

    Hi Paverguy

I did it and does not work is something quite annoying

Finally now i reset all settings.

Thinking they would return and be able to delete.

Or would have gone but still there

Now I have to organize all the phone again because reseted all

No doubt one of the most annoying BUGS iPhone.

In the end, I have to do what not wanted from the beginning to remove the email account and install again

    Thanks Marcelo

    Attention

The BUG arises when we try to send mail from applications.

For example a scanner file app.

Marcello Apple ... Try one of these ... one should one and there are three (3) to try. If none work, maybe you have a virus ... Wish you luck:
