I saw the icon "iPod" on the standby screen of a friend's iPad and when I clicked on it, exactly the same interface you 'd find on the physical iPod, showed up. I have beent battling to download this icon or, if you like, app to no avail! What do I do?

A couple,of possibilities:

"iPod" was originally the name of the music player in the iPad. As of iOS 5, it was changed to "Music". You friend may be on an earlier version of iOS.
He jailbroke his iPad.

Why don't you ask your friend?

It's possible they are connected via the Bluetooth, is there an actual iPod in the area?

No, that's not possible because blue tooth on either device does not work that way.
