Hello, & a warm welcome! 🙂

You can keep eMail in the iCloud even in 10.5.8.

Good work so far, if you now wish to upgrade we just need to make sure the Disk is OK & that your Mac can do it.

Could be many things, we should start with this...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...

General requirements

* Mac computer with an Intel processor

* 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)

* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

* DVD drive for installation

* Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

* Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Thanks for responding. I have looked for my original install disk..... must be in another state at the moment. Is there a safe way to check the disk with out the install disk?

I can always wait ....

Excellent advice it seems. Express lane didn't mention any of the prep above just the install instruction link.

Or would you think ... since I have a time machine back up that I could go ahead?

Use the 10.6.3 install disc!

It's always wise to check the health of the HDD before installing a new OS.

The 10.6.3 installer (if all goes well) does not touch your applications, user data, or preference settings. It simply replaces the System files with the new ones.

Having said that, you should always have a backup just in case (as I note you do).

Make sure HDD drive sleep settings are set to 'never' before proceeding - it doesn't do to interrupt an installation.

Carry out the installation while booted to the SL disc; when it comes to the restart, be aware it will take considerably longer than normal as the OS is shifting files around. So don't panic!

Thanks for reminding me about the sleep settings. Have run into that a couple of times without learning my lesson.

So... to check the disk with 10.5.8 on it I am to use the upgrade install disk for 10.6.3 ?

Do I have it correctly now?

What does SL disk mean?

Thank you noondaywitch & BDAqua both. My sincere gratitude.

Getting closer but want to be sure I understand before I start.

SL = Snow Leopard (aka OS X 10.6.x).

Yes, boot from the 10.6.3 disc and use Disk Utility as BD says.

When you've finished with the Disk Repair check, quit Disk Utility and click the 'continue' button on the installer screen.

Then go and have a coffee or six. (well, not right away - you'll need to ignore a few questions on the next few installer screens before it will get on with it.)

I have office for mac 2008 - quicken old and rosetta stone which I hear don't work with Lion -

PPC ?

and Rosetta?

(as part of Rosetta Stone or different)

I have heard that about Lion so I am resisting going further than the upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6.

I have 2 gb of ram ... still I am a tiny bit concerned that even going to 10.6 will not be fun! (slow things down)

Ah! a litle confusing I see.

Rosetta is a PPC code translator to allow older apps to run on Intel processors.

Rosetta Stone, as you know, is a language tutor application. No relation at all!

PPC = PowerPC processors made by IBM and Motorola and used in all Macs from the first iMac until 2005.

The processors were known by their manufacturers designations - G3, G4 and G5.

Office 2008 I believe is Intel native, so no problem there.

Quicken will probably be PPC.

No idea about Rosetta Stone.

You can find out what you have though, quite easily, by going to  > About this Mac > More Info > Software tab > Applications.

That will list all applications and processes with their version numbers, last modified date and kind (Classic, PowerPC, Universal or Intel).

Intel - will run only on Intel processors

Universal - will run on Intel or PPC

PowerPC - will run only on PPC or under translation with Rosetta

Classic - legacy OS9 and earlier - won't run on anything later than OS X 10.4.x with Classic environment installed.

It can be done with 2GB, but I found even 3-4GB lacking for 10.6
