Cannot install iTunes on windows 7 64bit

Okay, I like so many cannot install iTunes on Windows 7 64bit.

Now Orginally I got a message saying something to the effect of:

There was a problem with the install you do not have permission for something...

Through some investigating my iTunes was being installed and removing all my permissions to view and/or modify files within that folder. Even if I was logged in as admin and installed as admin all the permissions would simply block me out.

This kind of had a familar feeling as in the last few versions of iTunes I had to run as admin just to open it (this is really annoying by the way)

So I searched the net and many people were saying to uninstall everything "Apple" and try again. So I did that. Now I have this new message:

there is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

And again I scoured the internet for a way to fix this. I apparently am supposed to goto Control Pannel/Programs and Features and select Apple Software Update and select repair. The problem is that no longer exists in my programs list since I removed it in the earlier step. iTunes still refuses to install spitting out the same error forever. I tried the Microsoft "fix it" tool which is supposed to remove the Apple Software Update incomplete uninstall (which is apparently the whole problem) but it doesn't show up in the list for "fixing".

I am at a loss. Why doesn't Apple fix this. I cannot update my iPhone to the latest software in fear I may need to restore it. With no iTunes that is impossible. I cannot change any of my music or do anything until this is resolved. If/when iPhone 5 comes out I cannot get it either unless this issue is taken care of somhow.

I searched for an installer for just the Apple Software Update program But it seems to not exist as a standalone thing (it would be useful if it were though). If it were perhaps I could install it again and then successfully remove/repair it and iTunes might install finally.

Now I have had previous versions of iTunes working perfectly fine. I do not recall which version I was using before I tried to update and fell into this abyss however.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Even if you've already uninstalled all Apple software there may be some files left behind which it would be useful to remove.

When you are ready to install right-click on the setup file and run the installer as administrator. It may also help to pre-install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable. In some cases you may also need to disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus software while installing. I've seen a number of cases where it was impossible to install iTunes without completely removing AV software.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I had failed attempts to download current version of itunes for I don't know how long. When the messages became too annoying i decided to attempt ti fix it. First, I discovered that the failure was occurring during the download. I remember having a similar problem with Norton interfering with another installation file. Took too long to get around but I also remembered something I read about Chrome. So I tried the download from Firefox and then the download went through and I got my update. Why the problem, is this going to be an ongoing thing?

Same problem. Latest 10.3.2 update wiped out my iPhone 5s. A local Apple repair shop confirmed there were others that also had their iPhones effected. I tried to update several times through iTunes 12.6.1 that was already installed on my 64 bit Vaio VPCF2. Would not update ... error message directing me to to restore the iPhone in recovery mode. Tried that. Error message again saying restore unsuccessful. Tried rebooting as directed by Apple. Same error messages saying update unsuccessful and restore unsuccessful. Uninstalled iTunes as directed by Apple. Tried to reinstall. Would not reinstall. Tried all the above with antivirus and firewall disengaged. No luck. I went over to a laptop with Windows 7 Pro .... 64 bit on it, an HP DV7-1130US. Tried to install iTunes on that computer. Install was unsuccessful. I contacted a local shop that specializes in iPhones and they informed they have had others like this and the phone is dead and can not be restored. They had tried on several other iPhones. My iPhone is now in the trash and a new Samsung Galaxy is on its way to me .... my family is done with Apple.

THANKS!!! Even though I had administrator rights, right-clicking on the .exe file and selecting "Run as Administrator" made it work. Been fretting with this for awhile, because I started out having problems with installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - wound up having to clear cache. And then this problem with installing iTunes. Sure was a lot easier with the older iTunes. Thanks again!

there is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

Just in case, let's try a standalone AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi install.

Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:

http://www.rarlab.com/

Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe, and select "Extract to iTunesSetup". WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup".

Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi to do a standalone ASU install.

(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi again.)

Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If not, what error message do you get? (Precise text, please.)

Thanks, that was a good attempt. I didn't know I could access the files like that.

However,

It will not install. I get the same error message "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vender."

I also tried right clicking the file and selecting both uninstall and repair. Both times I got the same error.

"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

Was a good try though. At least I know that doesn't work now.

This is starting to look familiar. (Unfortunately, not in an especially good way.) I'm suspecting "ronno syndrome".

When doing your troubleshooting and research (prior to posting here), did you run across the following topic?

Problem uninstalling/installing itunes

I read through that thread. Seems very similar. I tried the very last step of creating the log. During the install I got a new error.

During the Copying new files part of the install.. Very early in the process.User uploaded fileUser uploaded fileUser uploaded fileUser uploaded file

I don't understand the permissions stuff I am the admin on this pc. Except when installing apple products anyway.

I almost had hope, As I opened the start menu on the last error to open paint I saw new installed software and it was the Apple Software Update util. But when I closed the error it vanished... But I now have that log anyway.
