iPhone not syncing with Exchange server

I'm having an issue with IOS 5.1.1. Since Monday, my iPhone is downloading emails from my Exchange (outlook) account like it always has, the problem is, when I delete an email in Outlook, it's not deleting from my phone. Similarly, reading an email in Outlook doesn't mark it as "read" on my phone. This leaves me at the end of the day with hundreds of unread/extraneous emails on my phone that I have already addressed, filed or deleted in Outlook. How do I correct this?

This is weird because it has worked correctly with everything syncing properly up until this week, and I did not update anything.

I'm using a PC for the Outlook - same PC as always, and no updates unless my company updated something remotely without my knowledge.

I have set up my email account using the "Exchange" option when I added it. Already tried deleting and re-adding the account (twice).

Thank you!

I'm having the same problem both right before and during 5.1.1. and using Mac Mac Mail.

Both my email addresses are Gmail and a Google Mail app, and they are set up as an exchange on my phone. Whever I check an email on the phone, it's marked as read on the Mac. But when I read it on the Mac it doesn't make as unread on the phone.

If I delete the account on the phone, then re-add, it shows the proper number of messages.

Anyone?

Do we know if Microsoft is working on this problem? I am having the same issue and have found the same thing OWA is not updated to what Outlook for Mac 2011 is displaying even though it says it is synced. My iPhone is showing exactly what OWA shows and as soon as I make a change on OWA it is almost instant on my IOS device and vice a versa.

Not sure if MS is doing anything about this. I fixed my situation by doing the following:

1. Delete the exchange account from Outlook on the the Mac.

2. Use OWA to remove all of the deleted messages (this was part of my problem; I had over 60K deleted messages; some of those seemed to be duplicates from previous attempts to correct the problem). Also delete some of the older "sent mail". (I have always been archiving old in-box stuff, but didn't think so much about deleted and sent.)

3. Add the Outlook account back to Outlook for Mac. Wait for things to settle down.

N.B., it took a couple of attempts to accomplish step 1. Outlook crashed once and hung once while trying to remove the account. I did a database rebuild after it was removed to make sure all was clean.

Only thing I lost (that i've detected so far) are my signatures. They are stored locally as part of the account and when the account goes...

I am having the same problem with both iPhone and iPad when on wifi at home. Works over 4g on both. Works at office over wifi. Home ISP is Comcast. Work ISP is Comcast. Only difference is home is residential service, work is business connection. Very frutrating. Have deleted account on my iPad, powered off and added again. It creates the account fine. But it will never connect to server to retrieve mail when using wifi.

Has anyone gotten anywhere on this? I have a user with an iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1.1 having the same issue with an Exchange / ActiveSync account. If I read the message either in Outlook or in OWA, the message does not get marked as read on the iPhone until ALSO reading it from the iPhone. If the user reads a message on the iPhone first, it will show up as read in Outlook and OWA.

It seems like an issue with the mail Push. Whether that's due to Exchange or the Apple software, i dont know. I have tried removing the account from the iPhone and readding it. It shows the correct read/undread messages after readding the account, but does not update any further changes of the sort.

We are connecting to Exchange 2010 SP1 with Update Rollup 6 installed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

As I had said in my earlier post, my problem was with outlook being slow in updating exchange.

However, this does not explain your symptoms with OWA.

When I used OWA, the "state" seen by OWA and the iPhone matched (what was read, was read; what was not, was not). However, Outlook (in my case, Outlook on the Mac - Office 2011) was way behind in updating this state. If you read something in Outlook, it could take a very long time to reflect this state back to the Exchange Server.

Part of the reason for this was that I had a lot of stuff, both in my inbox and in my deleted mail. I had to clear this out to allow Outlook on the Mac to perform at all well.

Are you sure that OWA is aligned with Outlook? OWA is a direct view into the server state, and should match server state. Outlook and the iPhone mail app are accessing the server, and have the opportunity (at least) to not show the current state of the server (bugs, delays, performance, etc).

If OWA and Outlook are really correctly in sync, and it has to be an Apple problem or a problem in the exchange server interface Apple is using. But this was not my experience.

Thank you for your response mjgrady71.

When I was first troubleshooting the issue I did see that Outlook was not seemed to update very quickly. I found that once I disabled "Cached Exchange Mode" on the account, it kept up to date with what I was seeing in OWA. Perhaps your issue was related to the cache?

My feeling is that it is a client-side Apple issue as well. But I do realize that their software still requires a sync to our Exchange server.

The only hint I've seen towards resolving it is possibly wiping the iPhone, but this is a company CEO and i'd like to reserve that as a total last ditch effort and hope that a software issue can be resolved instead. Any further insight is appreciated.

Mine goes even deeper. My Outlook is running Cached and it is synced with my OWA. I can send calendar events that synch with Outlook and OWA but not Iphone. I can send calendar events from iPhone that synchs with both OWA and Outlook. None of the Calendar events created with Outlook or OWA show on the phone. I have loaded the user profile on 2 different phones that work with other profiles with same results. All this is after blowing out the users Exchange Profile and AD profile and creating a new.

The phone is syncing with all the other functions (mail, task, etc..).

It's always a director or CEO isn't it? I have a very similar issue with our CFO but this is compunded by him having an iPhone and an iPad which have the same exchange (2003) account synced. They have all stopped syncing properly with the exchnage server, they still recieve mail but if you read or delete a mail on any one of the possible clients it isn't updated on any of the others. This wasn't an issue last week, previously they all synced nicely, I have an iPad and my account and devices are still in sync.

I will try removing the accounts and adding again, also noted that this could be an account size issue mentioned by mjgrady71 above, I know this account is a particularly large one.
