The may update has Changed the sections button- now there is a + instead of a jigsaw: I can't figure out how to combine sections? All tutorials appear to relate to pre updated version. Can anyone help. Ty.

Hi. Forgot to say this relates to GarageBand for iPad. Running latest os

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

Hi. Based on the online tutorials it was possible to combine sections previously. To me it would make the program almost pointless if this could not be achieved: I mean how could you possibly record a vocal section by section. It is also a lot easier to play the bass part over the entire song. There MUST be a way to do this. Cheers for your input. Ty.

I need to combine sections for a different reason. I'm only part way through a song where I've used 8 bar sections and am not done with the song at 80 bars, so I need to duplicate sections and can't (16 bar verse, 16 bar chorus, 8 bar bridge and intro).

Apple, please restore (or introduce) this necessary feature! We need to be able to join sections

I think it can be done by extending say, section A, so that it is long enough for everything in section B, then manually copying and pasting each track from section B into section A, after the existing content, before deleting section B. Not an easy task! Ideally we would be able to merge sections where needed, and repeat them without taking up more memory by describing a song as, for example, A-B-C-B-C-D-B-C-E. The song length limit is 320 bars over 10 sections. Each section can have as many bars as you want.

These sections take a bit of planning ahead. I found it best to set up the sections with the correct length before I start recording anything. That will avoid the necessity to merge.

The arrangement track in the iLIfe GarageBand '11 can do all that, and sometimes I simply record the smart instruments on the iPad and share the project to iTunes to finsih it on my mac. 😀 So get the best of both.

THanks, Turingtest2 and leonieDF. Actually you can join sections, I just couldn't get it to work at first. You hold your finger on the first section you want to merge, and then tap the additional sections. Once they are all darkened, you release and lightly tap within the darkened area. You will be presented with "Join" as an option in the pop-up. I haven't tested to see if the sections ultimately get renumbered correctly.

I couldn't get it to work at all. Do you tap in the Song Sections popup window or in the Tracsk View window. Can you describe it zgain where to tap in what window or what view.

Thanks

Sorry to bother you again but it doesn't work. I must do something wrong.

I am in the Track View

I select "All Sections" from the Song Sections popup menu

The Tracks View displays all four sections i currently have A, B, C and D

Now I hold my finger on the first section and tap another section - nothing happens.

I tried to tap on the Trak Lane or the Time Ruler and even tried to hit the Section Letter on the Time Ruler - nothing. What am I missing

Now I know what is going on: You are confused with some of the terms and procedures:

What you are describing is "Join (green) MIDI Regions" which has nothing to do with Song Sections.

You said "On the iPad the tracks are green". That is not really true. What you referring to is "MIDI Regions are green".

Tracks on the other hand (the Track Headers) are gray by default. When you select an Audio Track, it's Track Header becomes blue and when you select a MIDI Track, the Track Header becomes green

That means there is NO "Join (Merge) Song Sections" procedure in GarageBand at the moment.

Hope that helps
