Is a vent mount safe?

Is it safe to use one of those doodads that hold it in front of a vent, with the heat on? I can't close the center vents in my car.

It wouldn't be good for the iPod to be next/in front of a heater/AC.... The iPod can either get too hot or cold.

Extreme temps are bad, yet there are a number of these vent products. Has Apple made a statement? Any Apple people want to give a definitive answer?
