Giving yourself points...

I've noticed that some posters answer their own question and give themselves points.

How/Why is this allowed?

This would artificially inflate ones standing in the community.

It is allowed to mark your own replies as 'correct' or 'helpful' as they might actually be so, but you don't get any points from them - you can only get points from correct or helpful on other people's threads.

No solved and or helpfuls you give to yourself do not affect your points total.

It is useful in some cases to mark a post of yours as solving or helping your question. Lets say after posting you discover the answer on your own. By posting what you found and marking it as solved you help people who come along later with the same problem and you also keep folk from spending time replying to your post.

They cannot give themselves points - you want receive any points if you mark your own post, but they can mark their own answer as correct or helpful, if they solved their own problem. This will close the thread, and will help others to find the solution, that is why this is allowed.

But they shouldn't be there if no points are available to be awarded.

You are perfectly right, Michael.

But that is a question of timing.

  1. You receive the email with the links pretty soon after the message is posted. If you still can award points, there will be links.
  2. Then you wait a litte bit, maybe award points to other posts,
  3. When you come back to your email you'll see still the buttons to award the points. Nobody can change the mail you alredy received, even if you have no longer points to give.
