Preview disabled in log and capture

I am using Final Cut Pro 7 on the latest iMac i7.

I have a DVCam deck connected to the iMac via a firwire 800 cable.

There is a DV tape with DV footage in the deck.

I am able to control the deck from log and capture but the display is the colour bar window with PREVIEW DISABLED on it.

I have checked and double checked that my settings are correct, that video and audio are selected in capture settings etc etc.

Everything is selected correctly on the deck.

All mu suer preferences and presets are also correct.

I have trashed FCP preferences as well.

The content on the tape is viewable fine on the camera and on an external monitor.

So, in summary:

I am unable to log and capture DV material from the tape even though the deck is controllable from log and capture window.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Let's grasp at another straw, did you, by any chance, record this tape in LP mode? if so, the deck won't play it back but the camera will.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the dsr-11 will playback LP material thru firewire, The only adjustment you need to make is to make sure the capture preset is set for 32k audio.

Can you connect the dsr-11 to a video monitor, play the tape and turn the display on the remote and see what the settings for the tape are? Might give us a clue.

Good question: checked and it wasn't shot in LP.

Don't have a monitor now as it was only on hire and it's gone back. However, if you consider that the deck was last used a couple of months ago with the G5 before I purchased the iMac, and it worked perfectly well with the same material then in log and capture in FCP6, and I've not changed anything on the deck, then it's safe to assume all is well with the deck.

And the puzzle continues...

You can try to capture in quicktime player from the deck. Should show if the deck is actually outputting image via firewire. File: New Movie Recording. Just tried it with my dsr-11 and I see an image on the computer screen.

Although the deck may have worked fine a few months ago, equipment does fail.

I've got my deck connected but when I click on New Movie Recording the iMac's built in camera pops up with me on screen. I pressed play on the deck but that didn't work.

Graham,

Go to Quicktime preferences and select "recording" and select your deck from the drop down menu.

Thankls for the advice.

I set up Quicktime 7 as suggested. It had recognised the deck. I set it playing, clicked on new recording and there was the image and sound, no problems at all.

I'm in your hands guys. What next do you think?

Try creating another user on your computer and start from scratch.

Just another straw to grasp at !

Actually, before you do that try repairing permissions in disc utility.

David's suggestion about creating another user is a good one.

The only way for us to help you from a distance is to proceed in a methodical manner.

Early on in this thread I suggested that you check out the user tip on troubleshooting fcp

Please go through it and let us know which of the steps you've tried.

Can you connect a video monitor to the deck and turn on display and tell us exactly what the settings are for the tape in question?

If you set the dsr11 to E to E and feed a video signal to it with the input on the front of the deck set appropriately, you should see the video in the log and capture window. Might be worth a shot.

Try doing a short capture from the deck - regardless of what you see on the screen - and tell us what you get..

Did you find/work out a solution to this ("preview disabled in log & capture)?

I have exactly the same problem (abeit I'm on FCP6) and get "preview disabled" message in Log and Capture, although it still controls my deck (as I can see that on a seperate monitor) and can see/record in Quicktime.

I'd really appreciate your help!

Try shutting everything down. power up deck, power up computer, launch fcp. Make sure you have the correct easy set up. Under the view pulldown > refresh audio/video devices. Launch log and capture.

SOMETIMES FCP gets confused when things are powered up in a non traditional way.
