iphone upgrade 3.1.2 to 5.1.1 lost all messages and notes

I just upgraded an iphone 3gs from 3.1.2 to 5.1.1 and it properly updated the firmware then at the end tried to restore the data. While restoring it kept prompting me for a password which I don't have any setup so I pressed cancel and it started synchronizing but my messages and notes are not showing up! I'm particularly concerned because I checked the size of the backup and it's like 200 mb! that seems very small.

Is there a way I can fix this so it sync back everything properly and otherwise how can I restore to my previous backup with the previous firmware?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 3.1.2

It sounds like you need that password - all Apple devices are totally dependent it it these days.

Thank you bythecshore! I was trying everything ignoring that popup but it really was key, I tried all the password and it eventually went through. I'm really curious though because the backup was 200 mb and it seemed to have restored up to 6 GB! either it's amazing compression or i was looking at the wrong place. thank you!
