Yes. In order to store content on the iPad you first need an app on the iPad that supports that file type - unlike a 'normal' computer the iPad doesn't have a file system, and everything on it has to be associated with an app.
Apps that support powerpoint files include Apple's Keynote app (copying files to/from Keynote), and third-party apps such as Documents To Go ('premium' version which supports editing powerpoint files and not just viewing them) and its manual and QuickOffice Pro HD (user guide).
I have latest version of QuickOffice on my iPad2. but the problem is transfering files form PC or Notebook to iPad, for showing them in my class with QuickOffice on any Video projector devices!
