Chrome is so slow on Mac OS X 10.7.4

I recently updated my Mac Book Pro to the new Lion (10.7.4) Operating System. Is anyone experiencing really slow perfomance? I am particularly experiencing slow perfomance online while on the internet; using Chrome. My internet pages are stalling and/or take a while to load. Is this releated to the operating system or memory?

Please share your thoughts and a POSSIBLE WORK AROUND! Thanks.

One of the biggest hogs there is is Browser History. All that History gets stored in RAM and can push your Mac into non-performance. Check the settings, and do not save more than ONE DAY worth of History.

Then clear the cache or restart the Browser or the Mac.

Next check for enough memory:

I have the same problem and have been unable to find a solution. I run Chrome on two Macs with 10.6 and it's great. I have a Mac Mini running 10.7 and Chrome is completely unusable. I've switched to Safari on that machine, but I test Chrome every once in a while and as far as I can tell things are getting worse, not better. Initially, it was just very slow. Now it hangs and crashes.

That machine has 8 Gb of memory, compared to 4 for both of the others, so that's not the issue. Someone suggested turning off the pre-fetching, but that didn't help. There is also a beta release of Chrome called "canary", which runs no better and has more bugs.

It's hard the believe there's enough difference in the operatings systems to cause such a degredation

in performace, so I'm sure it's something very subtle and silly, but as far as I can tell, no one is working

on it very hard.

If you find a solution, let us know. I really prefer Chrome.

I have the same problem and would love someone at Google to pull their finger out and fix it. Not only does Chrome slow down Chrome, it makes all the other Apps cripplingly slow so i'm watching a wheel go round all day.

And if you run Safari and Chrome at the same time, forget about it.

Someone told me that running too many tabs in Chrome was not advisable either.

Thanks.

I too have this problem after updating to Lion OSX, but for me the problem arises in the first minute of the browser opening... I've been checking the CPU usage in Activity Monitor and it doesn't seem out of the ordinary.

Admittedly, it isn't as bad as some people have described but annoying enough to keep searching for a different browser... Only Firefox left to try out as not a fan of Safari at all.

Same here. Not so sure it's 10.7.4 as much as the latest release of Chrome itself. Was working fine until 19.something. It was worse than slow - it actually ended up freezing my OS completely! Only way to get going again was to hold the power button on my MacBook Pro until it shut off, and then turn it back on.

Made me feel like I was working on a Windows PC, again!

Anyways, back to Safari for now, and life on the web is good again.

I primarily like Chrome because I often have to work with (underpowered) PCs at work and I like using the same browser everywhere I go. Chrome is by far the most efficient browser on slow PCs, while Safari kind of drags. Firefox would be another option, but they went through a period when it it was *fantastically* slow, which put me off forever.

There are also a couple of Chrome features I really like:

1. I really like the integrated address and search bar. Now that I'm used to it, when I use Safari, I'm always forgettting and typing search strings in the address bar and getting errors.

2. I like the fact that Chrome will automatically detect and translate pages in foreign languages.

The bottom line is that I'm used to it and I like using it and it's nominally supported for OSX, so I'd like to see it working. It works great on my two Macs with 10.6, so it's reasonable to think that almost a year they could have gotten it to work with 10.7. I assume that this is probably Google's fault rather than Apples, but I'd like to see evidence that *someone* is working on it.

That is coming to Safari in Mountain Lion.

There is a Safari extension for that. It isn't automatic however.

People are aware of it but it is likely to be easier to Google to fix their code than Apple to fix the kernel or the video driver.

There are a lot of powerful features coming to Safari that Google will have to play catch up on. I suggest taking another look at Safari when Mountain Lion comes out. Personally, I'm trying to wean myself from Google with search engines like DuckDuckGo, IxQuick, and MillionShort. Google is getting less and less useful as it tries to be helpful and fixes my precise spelling to be something that will return more results from its advertising customers.

Thanks for the information Grant!

I know that probably you have all thought of this, but saw a blog with this on it, tried it on my Air and it SEEMS that Chrome is using less CPU% and maybe running a little faster!

1. Go to settings (preferences)

2. Click on show advanced settings

3. scroll down and UNclick Predict network actions to improve page load performance (yes, I know what it says but unclick it and see what happens)

See if it makes any difference at all and let us know if it does. Something small until Google addresses it more formally....
