As Don Archibald says, this is normal for Mac OS X.

If you have difficulty seeing your cursor when moving the mouse/trackpad after it has disappeared, you could install Mouse Locator (free download)

You can even set Mouse Locator to infinity and have a visual indicator where your cursor is every moment.

Open a text doc - just about any, including a reply box in these forums.

Note the blinking cursor, indicating where text will start when typed. Note also the mouse's cursor has changed to an i-beam type cursor.

Then type, at least one character. The blinking cursor remains visible, but that's not the mouse cursor; the i-beam, the mouse's cursor, does vanish, and remains invisible until the mouse is wiggled or equivalent.
