Q: 4G service on an iphone?

4G or not 4G. I have consistent ATT&T data issues using a G4 iphone. AT&T replaced my old (Jan. 2011) SIMM chip with a new model to address the issue - with the assurance that I would be able to register a 4G icon in serviced areas. I can not. Whether or not I am able to  USE the 4G network is still uncertain. My understanding has been that the iphone 4 chip set was incapable of using 4G service of any type. Now, I have conflicting reports from Apple and AT&T that I Can and that I CAN NOT use and/or identify 4G service in a 4G serviced area. Does anyone have a definitive answer.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

The iPhone 4 CANNOT access the HSPA+ service of AT&T, which they label as 4G service (so does T-Mobile). It also CANNOT access AT&Ts 4G LTE service.

The iPhone 4s CAN access the AT&T HSPA+ service and the indicator on the phone will change to 4G if you are in an area with coverage. It CANNOT access the AT&T 4G LTE service.

We are half way there. Thanks.

When Apple created case number 317112774, the agent identified the G4 iphone as 4G friendly HSPA+ only. I believe that would be in the case notes. Please don't get me wrong.... they were very professional and repeting the information as best they could access it. — JS

How are we only half way there?

There is no G4 iPhone, there is the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4s. Which one do you have?

Half way because the misinformation  CAME from Apple. I stand informed, but as for what's being miscommunicated, it's out of my hands.
