my BT yahoo email account doesn't accept my password when my Mac tries to access it using mac mail but when I access My BT Yahoo via Safari it accepts the password.

When it doesn't accept the password from Mail , it can be things other than the password actually.
It could be their Server, which is contacted differently than through WebMail, it just means the Server listening on this port, (or not listening), is not finding your username & password.

Forgot to thank you, in my despair, but possibly have sorted it by simply resetting my keychain. It had the right password on it but something was amiss. Having reset it, the password still gets rejected a couple of times but eventually works.... at last. Fingers crossed xxx

Check if there's more than one entry in Keychain for it... 2 actually, one in, one out.
