No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support the copying of content off the iPad. If you want to copy photos taken with the iPad or transferred to the iPad via kit off the iPad then you can copy them to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083

I have wondered why apple won't allow this feature for the longest. I finally stopped wondering and bought another tablet brand that gives me more freedom without having a wifi leash to accomplish basic needs and functions. Also my new tablet allows me to share with all other tablets and computers. Trying to do this with an iPad is a losing battle.
Good luck!
No, but luckly -- thanks to iCloud -- you can download the pictures to your computer and then put them on the SD card.

And you are posting in an iPad forum because you are a troll?
No i am not a troll. It's just a frustration of mine with a device that i truly love ( my ipad ). I was sitting with a group of fellow students and two of us had ipads and the other three had other tablets. We couldn't use Wifi at the time and the other students were transferring media files and documents back and forth and we with the ipads were kinda left out. We could receive media through the connection kits but as far as giving files to others... forget it. I would love if apple would just add a way to transfer info off the ipad to an sd or mini sd card without the use of wifi or the cloud ( which also needs wifi ).
I do a great deal of traveling to some remote places and my ipad is small and easy to carry however I am limited by what I can accomplish with it when it comes to document and media transfer. You are not being a troll by expressing a frustration. Trolling is giving out useless information and causing chaos in a thread. That's not what I am doing here.
With fetures comes resoncibillity. Yes, a droid tablet has a file browser. And Yes, it has viruses.
Yes, but you have tp sync your pictures over to your computer and then put the pictures on the SD off the computer
Well, that's true and not true. The photo's are synced automatically thanks to iCloud, and you need a computer to save the files to.
Well said Fritzmoore. Maybe Chirs CA felt offended that you had bought 'off the grid'? 😉
I'm left in the same situation. I have a iPod Touch and now want to get a tablet to replace an old HP TouchPad. I travel a lot and I shoot RAW with small JPEGS. I use professional high speed back up drives (Nexto) to make copies, but I would like to easily share specific small JPEGS & video files I shoot along side RAW files (on a seperate SD card) with people as I travel. Without the need to travel with a laptop & tablet and without access to any wireless networks. This is currently completely impossible with an iPad. Which, when you spend $700 on a tablet is patently absurd.
Cloud storage only gets you so far. And that's if you live in a city with dependable and fast WiFi and / or 3G coverage. Most of the World outside major urban conurbations, has neither.
It would be incredibly useful if one could copy / move photographs & HD video imported from external cards, back onto another card or USB drive. In the mean time, I have no choice but to buy an Android Tablet such as the Acer A510 / Asus Transformer or Toshiba Excite 10.
Love the iPad 3's screen. Woud buy it in a heart beat if could perform this basic function. I'd even tolerate the dreaded iTunes for another year or two 🙂

Cheers, Tom 😉
Well, that clears that one up Tom! 😉
I think that the onus of the question is to enquire as to a method that doesn't involve another PC or network? Like simply being able to copy content from your iPad's media to an SD card plugged in the bottom of the iPad via the card reader add on. You know, like on every single other OS that supports external memory drives?!
Please excuse the sarcasm. I love the hardware, but this can be a seriously frustrating limitation sometimes.
KP - a related follow up question:
I had planned on using my 64GB iPad to download photos during an upcoming trip. I estimate that I will take approximately 2,000 images over a two week period, exceeding the last 1,000 allocated to Photo Stream. I also estimate that I will exceed the remaining memory on the iPad and wondered how to back up externally then delete the backed up images freeing space on the iPad for new images, but from this post can see that is not possible. I have a Mobile Me account that would work, except that Apple is discontinuing that service June 30th I believe and the iCloud service no longer has Gallery or iDisc.
I will not have access to my computer for that two week period. What approach can be taken to achieve protecting/backing up images using the iPad while traveling based on my above remarks? Can Photo Stream be increased to allow more than the last 1,000 images so that I can make those images perminant when I return to my home workstation?
Thanks, Scott
The best way to "back up your photos externally" while traveling is to buy several memory cards. They are comparatively cheap. Fill them up as you go and go on to the next one.
First, I'm assuming that you mean transferring images from your iPad to a SD card in the docked 'Camera Connection Kit' - correct?
Second, from 'where' are your images on the iPad, i.e. 'Camera Roll', in another folder in the 'native' iPad app.

same problem here! have a customer who just has to "maintain" a bloody PC because of the photographs! Everything else is beautifully done on the iPad... The shots from the camera can be importet to the iPad (but only in high resolution!!! - synced photos fill only a fraction of the space and are good enough for most purposes)
The true Apple solution could be: connect the SD card to the iPad and don't import the high res pictures, but resample to the same size than the usual pictures in iPhoto. True! SD cards are so cheap that they could be used for external storage. This proposal would at least be a compromise which is better than the present situation. At least you could work with the pictures / send them by mail / place them in Pages... not in full, but in reasonable resolution.
