why is speech application (system pref) no longer working with Lion? Or at least when I down loaded Lion it stoped working

Speech recognition software, used to be able to talk to my mac & I can see the microphone heres me though does not respond or dose not allow me to calibrate the voice commands like it used to.
The preferences have probably changed. To get it to work properly, use the Preferences to CHANGE the settings, then close the panel to save the changes. Then re-open the panel and set the settings to your liking and close the panel.
NOW test to see whether it is working.
A bit late, but came across your question and think I can answer it, IF the "software" you were using was Dragon/Nuance. Nuance screwed its Mac customers by selling its software to Snow Leopard-and- prior OS users, then refused to put any effort or money into making it compatible with Mountain Lion, Lion, etc. So, if that's the issue you're dealing with, your only choices are to re-install your old OS, buy the latest ripoff from Nuance for Mac users, or use the native capability that you'll find in Maverics, etc.
