Q: "Manage My Places" not displaying maps

In Manage My Places I click on any place in the list, and no map is displayed.  This just began, perhaps since upgrading to Lion.  I've worked with iPhoto since then, but perhaps not with Manage My Places.

This is the latest version of iPhoto, latest update.  I update iPhoto religiously, because I continue to hope, all evidence to the contrary, than each update will squash the many bugs which Apple seems to have built into iPhoto.

    @Richard,

    I am now on my other computer and "Manage My Places" works OK. It is an old iPhoto version: '09 - 8.1.2. OS X is also 10.6.8.

    Regards,

    Ernst

    I have been able to restore the maps for individual photos.  However, the large world map is still greyed out.  Any ideas on how to restore that map?

    Thanks,

    Peggy

    @Peggy,

    You are running iPhoto 9.3, aren't you?  What more often than not works:  Make sure that a teeny weeny map is showing for a photo that you have selected, then open Manage My Places.  Where the map should be is grey.  Now turn off Wifi.  Both map areas will display an alibi world map with a message that you don't have an Internet connection.  Now turn on Wifi.  The teeny weeny map will return, and the map area in Manage My Places will once again be grey.  Now in Manage My Maps select another place.  This should cause the corresponding map excerpt to be displayed.

    Any luck?

    Regards,

    Richard

    Richard,

    Thanks for your response,

    I'm using IPhoto '09 8.1.2.

    I followed your instructions, however the Large Places World Map is still greyed out.

    The maps for individual pictures have been greyed out.  Turning the WiFi off and on does restore those maps.

    The maps in Manage My Place  are working correctly.

    I have checked IPhoto for updates and it is up to date.  Do I need a newer version?

    Any ideas how to restore the Places World Map?

    Thank you,

    Peggy

    Peggy,

    Yes, Reuben (page 2), is also using iPhoto '09 and has had the same experience as you.  In iPhoto '09 turning the Internet connection off, then back on, does not get the big map (in the places view?) back.  iPhoto '09 and iPhoto '11 (i.e., version 9.x) are different beasts.

    Regards,

    Richard

    Richard,

    Do you think updating IPhoto '09 to IPhoto '11 would restore the big map?

    I really would like to find a fix for this problem?

    Thanks,

    Peggy

    Peggy,

    I'm trying to recall what iPhoto '09 was like.  Yes, I think upgrading to iPhoto '11 would restore it, but beware that iPhoto ''11 has other ... >ahem< ... features that might make you regret the decision.  So look first in these forums for complaints about overlapping places and other complaints about how Places works in iPhoto '11.  You might also be bitten by the bug that is causing the problem which is the subject of this thread, of course.

    Regards,

    Richard

    update on my progress with this 'no map in manage my places'.

    I spoke to apple help who sent me two files and a folder to delete in the library>preferences, to no avail.

    Rang back and the adviser asked me to set up a new user account (named 'test') and to log out and back in with the new account.

    Sure enough the manage my places map is now visable on the new user account.

    it should be noted that I am usng my iPhoto library on an external drive, and I swap it between a macbook Pro and iMac, neither of which showed the map on the admin account.

    So I trashed iPhoto from the original admin acount and re-installed it from the App store and........

    ..problem still exists. Bugger. Still at least I can manage the places on the 2nd account when I need too. Fix please apple!!

    @abg0201,

    Compare what Apple Care asked you to do and what it asked me to do.  I'm sure we were both asked to do the same things.  At the very least, the people who asked us to do it now know that it doesn't solve the problem.  And I would hope, at the very least, they documented the results for the engineers.  Furthermore, I assume there are other people who have the same problem _and_ have contacted Apple Care, and I assume they've been asked to perform the same experiments, have had the same results, etc.  Either the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing in Apple, or this part of the "support experience":  make each customer feel that he's being taken seriously.  Give him the impression that we're listening ... and hope he doesn't realize that we're not doing anything.

    I called Apple Care on June 2.  During the course of the call it became evident to the agent that he couldn't help, and the case was handed over to someone else, who instructed me to perform the experiments described in this thread.  He promised to put me in contact with someone who would call me.  I heard from the Tier 2 agent by email on June 5, and he called me the same evening.  As related above, we performed some more experiments, during the couse of which he was able to recreate the problem on one of his machines.  He was confident he had what he needed to make some progress and promised to call back the following evening, June 6, which he did.  During that call he apologized for having no solution.  He had sent some questions to the engineers but had received no answers.  He would be gone for about a week, during which time he hoped to receive an answer.  On June 13, in response to my question on his progress, he answered, "Am still waiting for a reply on this unfortunately."  On June 19 I asked when he expected an answer and have yet to receive a reply.  I have just sent the following email to him:

    "I am still waiting for some further action on this problem, so I assume you are too.  I think that we have both waited long enough, and it is now time to formally escalate and pass it up the support ladder.  Can I kindly ask you to please put me in contact with someone?"

    I would be grateful, and I think it would help us all, if those of you who have Apple Care use it.  Don't spend a long time with the agent doing experiments that have already led nowhere.  Simply refer them to this thread and insist on speaking to somebody higher up the support ladder.

    Regards,

    Richard

    I had the same problem not seeing the map with red pins in places, i.e. all i saw was a grey screen.  all I had to do was to delete all of the files in the Cookies folder and the map is back.  Had the same issue on my wife MacBook pro and my iMac.

    DOWNLOAD SAFARI AND RE-INSTALL to fix maps in IPhoto Places '09  8.1.2

    I too lost my IPhoto Places maps on June 2nd.  Initially I used Best Buy's Geek Squad tech support.  The second tech was able to fix the problem.  He said there was a corrupt file in Safari, not IPhoto. However, I didn't know what he did to fix the problem.

    A week later, the maps were gone again.  I tried to contact the same Geek Squad tech, but no luck.  I talked to several other techs, but they could not find a solution, even though I told them about Safari.  The last tech directed me to this web page.

    It was here I learned about turning the WiFi off and on.  That restored the maps to the pictures, but not the Big map.

    Today, at the Apple Store Genuis Bar, I was told they were unaware of this problem.  When I mentioned that Safari was where the problem was, he suggested I download Safari from the Apple Web page and re-install.

    So far this is working!    So happy all of the maps after two plus weeks.

    I hope this helps others too,

    Peggy

    @mtd123

    Which version of iPhoto has the bug that you have fixed by deleting cookies???

    A PLEA TO ALL NEW POSTERS:  Please state the version of iPhoto as iPhoto '09 or iPhoto '11.  In the About panel these will be identified as version 8.x.y and 9.x.y respectively.

    This thread really concerns iPhoto '11, but two posters have stated that they are using iPhoto '09.

    Richard

    By the way, just for the records, deleting Safari's cookies (e.g., by moving ~/Library/Cookies to the Desktop) did not solve the problem that in iPhoto '11 the maps don't appear in Manage My Places.

    I deleted all the Google related cookies found in safari preferences and... boom the map is back again!

    Thank to pegabus for his post that solved the problem for me (iPhoto 9 vers. 8.1.2).

    It seem Google have some to do in this problem!?!?
