how do i prevent safari from downloading every single file i open from my school website. if i open my class syllables 10 x, safari downloads it 10x. internet explorer gives you option to safe or just open. Does safari has this feature

From your Safari menu bar top of your screen click Safari > Preferences then select the General tab.
At the bottom of the General tab deslect: Open "safe" files after downloading
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

What kind of files are these? Do they download when you click a link to them?
word document, pdf.....mostly.
It would be normal for a Word document to download when you click on a link to it. A PDF might open in the browser or download as a file, depending on the type of link.

Every time you open what? The page? If a file downloads automatically when you merely open a page, without clicking anything, that's a misuse of JavaScript. Disable it before loading, or install a Safari extension such as JavaScript Blacklist that blocks it selectively.
I am a former Windows user too, and I agree -- I'm tired of having to sift through millions of files in my downloads folder every time I simply want to view a file from online. I'd rather just *open* up a word/pdf file (to view and manually save, if I choose) without having Safari download it automatically.
Did you ever figure out how to do this? I don't use IE, but Firefox has this option too.
