iWeb stopped its evolution, what software to use now?

Since Apple has discontinued iWeb (and you have version 2, not 3) and the fact that the machine listed in your profile (PowerBook G4) doesn't support the Intel software of most modern applications, there is little to suggest.

iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.

On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:

Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

◼ MobileMe Gallery

All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.

Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.

There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. Firstly, it is not iWeb 11 - iWeb 11 does not exist and it has always been iWeb 09 that is part of the iLife 11 package.

Take a look at RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express and Flux 4 as possible replacements for iWeb. You should be able to download trial copies of it and RapidWeaver and Sandvox are available via the Mac App Store as is Freeway Express and Flux 3/4.

There are others such as WordPress.com and .org that you can take a look at as well as Drupal and Joomla, which are content managment systems and need to be installed on your server.

Based on what I seeand read in this forum, it's not only iWeb that stopped its evolution.

Yes, I have downloaded trials of both RapidWeaver and Sandvox and personally, I don't really like them. I did try Freeway Express and that came closer, but I then downloaded a trial of Flux 3 and really liked that, so purchased it when it was on special offer. Flux 4 is now out and you can purcahse it or download a free trial of a month from http://www.theescapers.com. The Mac App Store also sells it.

Personally I really like it because there are import facilities and free code and you can do a lot more with it. There are templates that you can use to get you started or you can just use a page layout format without the template or start from scratch and there are other things that you can install along the way.

Some others on this forum don't like it but so far, I have switched to using Flux 4 and Old Toad has too, so he might chip in here with his thoughts on it.

Yes, with the CMS's, you would need to be online to update the website and I suppose that is a downside of those kind of things.

Hi can I just clarify? When MobileMe disappears, I presume iWeb will no longer function on iCloud? Or will it?

Are we looking at a complete new solution, ie hosting and authoring?

Very sad that apple never developed iWeb yet continue to develop a kids tool like GarageBand......
