iWeb stopped its evolution, what software to use now?

Hi,

Besides iWeb 11 I am wondering what software out there would do best to "take over" in terms of ease to use and nice result. I know iWeb 11 can still be used and build great websites but it will inevitably loose track with what is going on as development stopped since a while now, won't it? As far as I understand it (and correct me if I am wrong) iWeb generated files are not usable by any other website building software. Switching to another software means rebuilding all the site from scratch, wow that's a time killer! Anyway, before moving on I am looking to read from your experiences, your opinions and views about alternative webdesigning sofwares. I'm not much of a webdesigner but here is what I could put together with iWeb 08

iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.

On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:

Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:

◼ Password protection

◼ Blog and photo comments

◼ Blog search

◼ Hit counter

◼ MobileMe Gallery

All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.

Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. However, if the site is first published to a folder on the hard drive and then uploaded to the sever with a 3rd party FTP client those two features will be broken.

There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: iW14 - Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.

NOTE: the iLife 11 boxed version Is no longer available at the online Apple Store. To get a copy you'll have to try Amazon.com or eBay.com.

Firstly, it is not iWeb 11 - iWeb 11 does not exist and it has always been iWeb 09 that is part of the iLife 11 package.

Take a look at RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express and Flux 4 as possible replacements for iWeb. You should be able to download trial copies of it and RapidWeaver and Sandvox are available via the Mac App Store as is Freeway Express and Flux 3/4.

There are others such as WordPress.com and .org that you can take a look at as well as Drupal and Joomla, which are content managment systems and need to be installed on your server.

Thank you Old Toad.

I've been using a third party server ever sinced I have put my site up but wasn't aware when plublishing to a folder and upload it would kill RSS feed and slideshow subscription features (in fact I'm using Host Excellence since 4 years now).

Well as said I was so far using iWeb 08 and publishing to third party within iWeb only showed up in 09 version, didn't it? I'm late in upgrading, a new iMac with the last iWeb version copy will do me best.

Your tutorials are great source of info, great job of yours.

Hi Ethmoid,

Thank you for all your suggestions, will check them out.

Have you tried one or some personally? And if so what do you think of it/them?

I'm not a fan of content management systems as you need to be online to use them, don't you? Which makes it useless when wanting to work on your site when travelling by train or plane.

Yvon.

Alancito,

Thank you to for your advise on Weebly. Browser-based bluiders are not my favorite type of website builder although updating from any computer around the world if a great asset. Looks like this type of sofware is going to be big shortly so I should take a closer look.

This may be stupid to ask but I need to know, can you install iWeb on an iPad?

Best,

Yvon.

Hi,

Yes, I have downloaded trials of both RapidWeaver and Sandvox and personally, I don't really like them. I did try Freeway Express and that came closer, but I then downloaded a trial of Flux 3 and really liked that, so purchased it when it was on special offer. Flux 4 is now out and you can purcahse it or download a free trial of a month from http://www.theescapers.com. The Mac App Store also sells it.

Personally I really like it because there are import facilities and free code and you can do a lot more with it. There are templates that you can use to get you started or you can just use a page layout format without the template or start from scratch and there are other things that you can install along the way.

Some others on this forum don't like it but so far, I have switched to using Flux 4 and Old Toad has too, so he might chip in here with his thoughts on it.

Yes, with the CMS's, you would need to be online to update the website and I suppose that is a downside of those kind of things.

Hi AYGE,

As far as I read, iCloud is not a hosting server for your website whatever software you are using. You will need to get yourself a hosting service and publish there from within iWeb. I'm sure you can find tutorials on the web guiding you through the process.

I personally have never used MobileMe for my website and am still using iWeb 08 from which you can't publish directly elswhere but Mobile Me. I publish my site on the computer and then upload it with Cyberduck to Host Excellence. It works fine and was easy to set up.

Take look at Old Toad's tutorials like Life After MobileMe or Using HostExcellence

Trust that helps.

Best,

Yvon
