How can I get my iMac (Intel / Lion 10.7.4) to go to "sleep" using the Apple drop down menu. I have never had a problem until recently.

Some process is running that is preventing sleep mode,
Zap the PRAM and see if that changes things.
If you open "Force Quit" in the Apple menu are any programs highlited in red? Use Force Quit to close them. You can always hold the power button for 3-5 seconds to force shutdown.

Is there any way to determine whether some process is running?
