I'm working with extensive interview footage and I want to be able to color code it or otherwise indicate good clips from not so good, but preferably to color code so that it's not simply a binary choice like "favorite" in the events folder. I also want to do this in the timeline not in the events folder.
You could use roles.
Create some new video roles, assign them to your clips in the timeline, and set the timeline to display roles instead of clip names.

Click the clip appearance button at the top right of the timeline:
Afraid not. Clips have to be marked as favorites and keyworded in the browser. You can add markers to clips. The markers will appear and can be searched in the timeline index.
I find the easiest way to mark clips on the timeline is to open up the Timeline Index and simply change the name which then appears on the timeline. You can break an interview clip down into sections and rename each of those as needed, very handy. The clip's name in the browser remains unchanged.
Great, thanks everyone. It's not ideal, but I've figured out how to do what I wanted to do with a mix of markers and roles. I wish you could use the range tool and then simply color code the selected range. As is, to assign roles you have to use the razor tool and create a separate clip.
Select the clip (or clips). Make independent clip if part of a larger clip. To colour-code clip names:
COMM + OPT + 1 (no colour) or 2 (orange) or 3 (red) or 4 (blue) or 5 (purple) or 6 (green)
