How do you intend to dial out without a modem?
Well Sig thank you for replying to my questio, and yes I do have a modem, but my problem is when I try loging into my AOL account on my mac it doesn't work as it should. I have the same setup om my windows system and it works perfectly. Below is the three steps provided by AOL service providers, ie. For Dial-Up location, For a Broadband location and For a Dial 800 Number location. So the later which is dialing 800 number location is what I am finding difficulty doing on my Mac. I will appreciate it very much if you could help me out. I have been using windows all my life and this is my first Mac, I hope you understand my situation.
Creating a Location
You need to create a location if you have never signed on with AOL Desktop for Mac before, or if you want to create a new sign in location so that you can connect using a different connection method.
For a Dial-Up location:
On the AOL Desktop for Mac Sign In screen, click the Connection: drop-down menu to open it, then click Setup Connection.
In the New Set Name: box, type in a desired name for the location (e.g., Work), then click OK. A default location is already created called Home.
Click the Area Code: drop-down menu to open it, choose your area code from the list, then click it.
Click the boxes next to the access phone numbers you wish to use, to use to place check marks in them, then click the OK button.
Choose the appropriate dialing options, then click the OK button.
Click the OK button to close the Dialup Setup window.
Note: AOL strongly recommends that you contact your local phone company to confirm that any access phone number(s) you have chosen for dial-up access to AOL will not cause toll or long-distance charges to appear on your phone bill. Simply because an access phone number has the same area code or city as your dial-up location, it does not necessarily mean that it is in your local calling area. The access phone number(s) that you have selected may not correspond to your local phone company's billing designations and need to be carefully selected. If you do not contact your local phone company, you may unnecessarily incur phone charges when dialing an AOL access phone number. Only your local phone company can provide this information.
For a Broadband location:
You don't need to create a location if you plan to connect to AOL using a high-speed connection. AOL Desktop for Mac automatically detects your high-speed connection and signs you on to the AOL service.
Note: If you are using AOL Cable or AOL DSL, you will need to first connect to the Internet through AOL Connect, and then use AOL Desktop for Mac to sign on.
For a Dial 800 Number location:
On the AOL Desktop for Mac Sign In screen, click Connection: drop-down menu to open it, then click Setup Connection.
Click the Access Phone Number Set: drop-down menu to open it, then click Create Set.
In the New Set Name: box, type a name for the location, then click the OK button.
Click the Edit Access Numbers button.
Click the Area Code: drop-down menu to open it, choose 800 from the list, then click it.
Click the box next to the 800 number to place a check mark in it, then click the OK button.
Click the OK button.
Ensure that the Connection: box displays the newly created location, then click the Sign In button.
I will be waiting for your reply, thank you.
You do not say which exact Brand and Model of external Modem you are using, but I suspect that your problem may be that your MacBook Air does Not have the correct and current drivers for the exact Modem that are fully compatible with the Lion version of OS X. And if you happen to have an Apple Modem, for instance, it is no longer compatible with Lion and Apple has announced it never will be.
Hope this helps 🙂
