I have tried a remote restart and unplugging everythingg for 30 seconds, then starting it back up again.

Try a different HDMI cable or input, try cycling output resolution by holding menu and up key.....
If that doesn't help try restoring the unit with a USB to micro USB cable to connect it to a computer running iTunes.

I have half a dozen, many people have none.
Apple really should have included one if this is the official way to reset it, but even micro USB connection may not have worked as you usually get a logog suggesting a connection in that case.

I think I'd do the same - get a new one, avoid hassle and potential recurring hardware problem.
