Q: mac osx startup disk has no more space available for application memory

My imac shows this message "mac osx startup disk has no more space available for application memory"

I have 4gb of memory. When I exit all programs, this message still shows up with Finder in the Force Quit applications window.

Why is this happening? How can I see how much memory is being used at a specific time?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hi, it can be a bit confusing, but it's talking about free Disk space, which is used as Virtual Memory.

You really need to clear of at the very least 15 GB of space on the drive for safety, at this point data loss is quite likely.

See if you can Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), start trashing some big files & emptying the trash.
