The case I am using leaves the dock connector exposed. Is there some kind of plug to protect it. Should I protect it?

Most cases leave the connector exposed for convenience in charging, connecting to docks, and syncing.  So, unless you plan on using your iPhone in extreme conditions, IMHO, you don't need to protect the connector.
