Why can't I read books on my macbook pro?

What do I have to do to be able to read my books on my Macbook Pro?

It seems counterintuitive, and an unusually poor business decision by Apple, to provide the Kindle app for MacBooks and iMacs, but not allow someone to read their books purchased through iTunes on the same computer. It makes more sense to purchase the same book from Amazon so you have more flexibility on what devices you can read the book on. Hopefully Apple releases an iBooks app with OS X Mountain Lion.
