Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view. Photos that were synced from your computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from on your computer and then re-syncing.

Cheers, Tom 😉
Thanks, King Penguin - that is the answer I feared, now that I tried to restore over 4,000 photos to my wife's replacement iPad using iPhoto and my new MacBook Air.
That is SO **** ANNOYING (thanks, Apple)! I want to browse the photos on the iPad and delete individual ones therein, not do so on my MacBook Air.
Where is the logic in this limitation? (User-friendly, my bum!)
You synced them via the computer and that is how you need to remove them.
This is so disappointing.
Why doesn't apple allow us do delete our photos on ipad? They our content, not apple's, right?
I just bought an ipad2 and synced 2000+ photos with the macbook itunes.
From the comfort of my couch I saw some photos that must be deleted and some that must be rotated.
Apple does not show the Delete button for synced photos and suggests as convenient solution to:
1) run back to the macbook, boot it, log in.
2) connect the ipad,
3) locate the photos in the macbook,
4) delete them
5) resync
6) disconnect cables, shut down macbook,
7) go back to my couch to see the rest of the photos and repeat this if necessary.
I guess the same problem happens if you want to rotate a picture.
iPad prompts you to save it on a different folder, without touching the original.
Shepski - So the same issue for me, I hope they listen and update this...
There is nothing to update.
Apple does not read all these posts. This is a user to user forum and we are all users and not working for Apple. Leave feedback on the iPad for Apple here
Same issue. The synch with my computer via iTunes and unchecking the box worked before they moved to iCloud. Somehow all my photos are now clogging up my iPad 5.1 and I cannot deselect them the way i used to. Help help help!
Why are all my computer photos now on my iPad?
Why can't I delete them the way I used to via iTunes?
I now have no memory left on the iPad and a bunch of stupid photos I meant to edit and never did. If I delete them on my computer, will they delete on the iPad with the next synch?
Still I wanted only special photos on the iPad
Sorry for rambling. But it seems crazy!
Thanks King_P.. What an odd way, regarding Apples normal intuitive user friendliness. New to iPad, and not a clue in the manuals?. Bonus infor to my fellow sufferers: Have a lot of Nikon (.NEF) format pictures, but it shows much sharper if converted to JPEG before tranferring (sorry, syncronizing) with iPad.
Regards
