Q: Green light on, pictures won't take? Effects not working?

Sometimes when I boot up my macbook, the green photobooth light is on without opening photobooth, but I can't take a photo and the screen is black. The only thing that fixes it is to shut it down and turn it back on. Clicking "restart" just keeps it the same way.

Another problem I have is that when I open photobooth, the new effects that came with OS Lion do not work. In the grid that is supposed to show all of the different effects (such as the hearts and the dizzy birds) I just see regular images, and when I take the photo, the effects don't appear. This has been a problem since I upgraded to Lion.

I have a 2008 macbook, and my applecare has since run out. Options?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems that might be causing your trouble:

    • Restart your Mac again.  Then use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.

    • Then download and apply the 10.7.4 Combo Update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1524

    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart that completes the Combo update.

If your problem returns, test your iSight using the built-in iSight troubleshooting suggestions from Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 article.  Test more than one Apple camera app in more than one user account, but don't use the "Guest" account for testing.  If your Mac only has one account other than the "Guest" account, create a new user account for testing.

If you need to post back for more suggestions, tell us what you found in troubleshooting.  We will offer specific suggestions based on the details in your reply.
