Alias file?

When installing a program - as soon as I drag to applications - it turns into an alias file, and won't allow me to continue with the install. Is there a different install method? Can I do it manually from terminal? Should I get an installer App?

installing lightroom 3 via download, but I've also tried installing iwork via cd. Both ways, icon shows up on the desktop. I drag it to applications and then a terminal box appears. No further prompts for install after that. From what I can tell...appears that the files are originally .dmg but when dragged to Applications turns to alias.

I'm on an imac running lion (just upgraded)

You do not install iWork from a CD by dragging anything. You double-click on an installer icon then the software will be installed for you. I suspect this is true of the other software you download. It will be a disc image file you must first double-click to mount. Then double-click on an installer to install it.

You do not install applications on a disc image by dragging the .dmg file to your Applications folder. You may want to see Software Installation Quick Assist. You should also read the user manual that cme with your computer.

yes - my "written" mistake on iwork install...when I double click on iwork install icon this is the message I get in terminal:

Last login: Sun Jun 3 15:41:46 on ttys000

amandas-iMac:iWork09.mpkg amanda$

same with lightroom:

Last login: Sun Jun 3 20:00:48 on ttys000

amandas-iMac:Adobe Lightroom 3.pkg amanda$

from there - no more prompts or install instructions....just terminal message

Select one of those .pkg files. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With panel select Installer from the dropdown menu, then click on the Change All button. If Installer is not in the list, then select the option Other from the dropdown list. Navigate to the /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder where you will find the Installer application.

Now try double-clicking on the installers.

tried what you suggested with lightroom....had to choose Other (there was no installer from dropdown). navigated through system/library/but there were no CoreServices listed.

tried same approach with iwork, but there was no "Open With" panel in the Get Info window.

When I clicked System Preferences, it gave me this message:

You don’t have permission to change the application for this document only. Do you want to change all similar documents to open with the application “System Preferences”? This change will apply to all documents with extension “.pkg”.

Does this have something to do with my problem? Do I need to change security settings or create a new Admininstrator?

I think you are doing something wrong. Every version of OS X has a /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder:

User uploaded file

User uploaded file

This is what would appear in the Other option of the Open With panel of Get Info. Installer is located in the CoreServices folder.

And, here's a typical Get Info window:

User uploaded file Note the Open with: panel.

If you truly don't have a CoreServices folder on your computer, then you have some very serious problems that will require you to erase your hard drive and reinstall OS X.

ok - let me investigate the core services thing...mean time, I created a new administrator and suddenly iwork was able to install. Checked out my old admin and can't figure out what settings are preventing me from installing. The new admin obviously doesn't have all my settings and preferences, and I would like to avoid having to redo everything on the new admin....any thoughts on this?

Just tried to install Lightroom once more time under old admin and it worked! Not sure I believe that the simple act of creating a new admin, and then going back to the old admin to install would do it, but it has, so no complaints here! I possibly checked or unchecked something allowing to work in the process...anyhow, thanks for all the help!!!
