Q: Help! I think I have a virus??

Hi,  My MacBook has stopped and wont restart. It stops at the gray screen and then after about 20 minutes a symbol appears that looks like a nucular reactor symbol but instead of blunt triangles raidiating out fron the centre two are parrell lines and the other is a solid square.  Looks like somebodys signiture?

What do I do now.  I have my univercity assignement on it and no I haven't backed it up.  I have tried resetting the sms and pram but still no good.

I even connected to another Mac ver firewire to try and recover data fron hard drive bu no good.  Any help is welcome.  Rosco

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Is the symbol the same as the FireWire symbol described in this article? If that is so, your MacBook is booting into FireWire Target Disk mode. Usually this occurs when you start up the computer when holding down the "T" key. I assume this is not what you are doing. Is there an external keyboard attached? If so, disconnect it.

Still having the problem? I would suggest carrying the computer in to an Apple retail store or service provider so they can have a look at it. This sounds like a hardware problem.

    Best of luck.
