i have found my old IPOD with click wheel(very old) i used to be able to use it as a portable HD but now i plug it in to my computer and i doesnt show up at all. The ipod works as normal and charges while plugged into the computer(MAC)

Have you tried connecting it to another PC or Mac to see if it recognized there? This will help determine if it's an iPod issue or a Mac one.
I assume you have tried a different cable and USB port? If the iPod powered on when you connect it?

I have now tried it on my older g5 iMac (os 10.4) and isn't showing up on there now. Im Going to buy a new fire wire cable but can't see how it will make a difference as it is clearly connected as it is charging via the old 3rd party cable.???
Not all third party cables allow the iPod to both sync and charge. Some were designed to only allow the iPod to charge.
