Airprint from Ipad without Wifi-network?

My Mum is using her Ipad2 through 3g only, she doesn't have any wirless-network at home, as she doesn't have that much internet-traffic and the monthly 5gGB that she gets through 3g is usually enough for her.

Now I wanted to buy her an airprint enabled printer, will this also work without any additional wireless router? Are there printers available that can create an adhoc network?

I could buy a router for her of course, but then her ipad will probably try to get online through Wifi as well and won't be able to connect, or is there a way to use 3g for internet while staying connected to an "empty" Wifi at the same time? I want as little problems for my Mum as possible, so that she just clicks "print" and it should work.

Any ideas how to setup everything?

Thanks, O.

There are some hp printers that work in the ad hoc mode. Probably from some other manufacturers, but hp for sure. I am not sure if the existence of a wifi ad hoc network will shut down the 3G service, but if it does, she can simply toggle the wifi off unless she is intending to print.

Here is a link to the hp page about the set up.

Hi Oluv,

I finally solved this problem after several days of trying. I also needed an easy solution so my 75-year old friend who just bought an Ipad and never had a computer of any kind before could print but she only has a 3g connection to the internet. Turns out the important thing is to assign static IP adresses to the IPad and the Airprint printer AND DO NOT ENTER A GATEWAY ADDRESS, leave it at 0.0.0.0. When I entered a gateway address, I could print but would soon love the 3g connection and therefore the connection to the internet. Without a gateway address, both networks work at the same time. I did make sure that both IP adresses are on the same subnet (255.255.255.0) and gave them different IP adresses such as 192.168.1.50 for the ipad and 192.168.1.100 for the compter (the router had 192.168.1.1). Hope this helps you. My thanks to Blake (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1790651&p=-1&#bottom) who set me on the right track.

I have solved this exact requirement by purchasing an HP Photosmart 6520 wireless printer. Works like a charm.

I have an iPad with 4G cellular, and I have no wireless router for Internet in the house. My only Internet connection is 4G through Verizon cellular.

The HP 6520 has a "Wireless Direct" mode, and the setup guide tells you exactly how to set it up for wireless printer if you have no wireless router.

You set up the wireless direct through the touchscreen menu, and the printer publishes its own SSID.

On the iPad, and also my iPhone, I connect to that wifi SSID.

Then using the iOS print apps in Mail, Safari, Photos, etc. - Print to the HP Photosmart and it works perfectly.

No router needed at all.

And the cool part, I can print Photos from the iPad or iPhone to the Photosmart, which has a nice 4x6 photo paper tray, and the Apps and printer are smart enough to send it directly to the photo paper (vs. the normal 8x11 paper).

And this particular printer will print 2-sided if you want it to, and this option is presented to you in the iPad and iPhone printer dialogue.

This printer was $110 at Best Buy. I am quite a happy camper. Getting one now for my mother also who has iPad with 4G but no wireless router.
