Q: Fill in AppleWorks

Fill Right and Fill Down do not copy formulas on new spreadsheet. Works OK on older spreadsheet on same system.

AppleWorks 6.2.4, Mac OS X (10.3.x)

I am sure I am making an elementary mistake because it is so long since I used AppleWorks. If I FillRight from, say, B34, instead of copying the formula in B34 into the cells to the right, AppleWorks is copying the value in B34. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Tom,

Can't say I've ever experienced this, and in a brief set of tests, I haven't been able to reproduce it.

What's the formula? What are some sample values in the cell(s) referenced by the formula?

What is the step-by-step description of the actions you take to enter the formula inn B34, then fill it right to ??

Describing what you are doing could give a hint to what you are doing 'wrong.'

    Regards,

    Barry

    Barry,

Many thanks for your reply and suggestions.

The formula in B34 was =SUM(B31..B33) but I have now discovered that the calculation is not carried out and what is displayed is 0.00. So I have cleared B34 and keyed in =B31+B32+B33. B34 now displays the correct answer, 1025.00. If I use Fill Right to copy B34 to C34, D34 etc, =C31+C32+C33 goes in to C34, =D31+D32+D33 goes in to D34, etc. but what is displayed in C34, D34 etc is 1025.00 regardless of the contents the cells above.

I have now used Cmd+C to copy the whole spread sheet into an empty ApleWorks spread sheet and all the formulas and Fills work normally! So I think I have an easy solution to my problem, even though the mystery remains. I'll take care not to delete the rogue spread sheet in case you or I or someone wants to investigate further.

For the record I have been doing this on OS 10.5.8 and the spread sheet was originally created on OS 10.3.x.

Thanks again fro prompting me to do this work,

    Aha!

    That triggers a memory.

    You have Auto-Calculate turned off.

After filling, go Calculate > Calculate Now to update the values in row 34.

    OR

At any time, go Calculate > Auto-Calculate to turn Auto-Calculate on. Values will be calculated immediately on filling right.

    Regards,

    Barry

    Barry

You are quite right. After turning on Auto-Calculate, Fill Right and Fill Down and SUM behave normally. Many thanks indeed for your help.
