Size of html pages and download speed.

Hello, everyone.

I am working on optimizing my pages for a faster download. Most of my pages are taking a little too long to download and I want to improve download speeds in order to make the site more appealing and easier to navigate.

As I tried to find out the size of my pages as they are now I couldn't find an easy way to do it. When I look at the site files produced by iWeb all pages seem to have an index doc and a folder with the files associated with that page. I would like instead to find an easy way to check the overall size of the page in Kbytes so I can gauge whether they are okay or still need some more work.

In regards to this same topic, in today's world what would you consider an optimum and a maximum size in Kilobytes for a web page in order for it to download fairly quickly ? I remember in the old days when 56 K modems were used that the guideline used was approximately 50 Kilobytes per page but things have changed since then and most of us use faster services.

Any help and input will be appreciated.

Thanks.

The main thing to consider is the size of any media files. Images should be optimized before dragging into iWeb...

Movies and music should not be set to autoplay and, if possible, not to autoload either. Use a splash image for movies and set autoload to "none" if you are using HTML5 with flash fallback like this example...

Use MP4 for movies and MP3/MP4 for audio.

The biggest help to faster downloading pages is to run your files through an optimizer app before uploading to the server....
