TextEdit Saving without asking

My computer is set up with a network drive that does not allow for the new feature "versions" to function properly. I guess at some point a window popped up and asked if I wanted to save anyway and I clicked the "do not show message again" and cancel. Well it has remembered my choice to not show this message again but now it just permanently overwrites and saves text files when I close them without even hesitating. So 10 minutes ago I had a very important file open and accidentally modified it, I was done with the file but did not want to save it so instead of undoing I just closed the file. This new system has completely overwritten the file with this new version and when I reopen it there are no undo options or previous versions available to restore. How do I turn this stupid feature off?

I have been looking at that link for the last hour or so... And nope, I do not want to duplicate it, I simply want to turn it off completely and be able to close the file without it automatically saving the current "version."

I should clarify that this is a work computer that has network drives and for whatever reason these drives do not allow versions to work at all. When I first updated to Lion it stated this in a pop-up window. I checked the "Do not show this message again" box and closed it and now it is doing what I really need it not to do.

Does anyone know how I could reset my Versions or Auto-save preferences so that this window will pop up again?

Then use an editor that doesn't support Versions and Auto-Save. Not all editors support the feature. Most will not unless they were recently released since the release of Lion. Same for other applications you may use. None of Office 2011 support it, for example.

There is no preference for Versions and Auto-Save nor any definitive way to disable it. If you do a Google search you will find suggestions for things to do that may modify behavior somewhat, but I've not tried any of them.

Maybe so, but that's the way it is whether you wish to believe it or not. It eats up barely any disk space at all because only the changes are maintained and they do so in the document itself. It is nothing at all like Time Machine.

You'd be surprised how much easier things are when you actually understand how they work and why they work that way. This includes Time Machine.

So, I suggest you reinstall your system per the other person's suggestion. That will only take a few hours. Or you can do it my way which will only take you about 2 hours.

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

Well the two of you have been no help at all.

There absolutely must be a way to redo the preferences and get that pop-up window back, even if YOU dont know how. Clicking that box enabled some line of code in some file somewhere and all I need to do is undo that change.

Can anyone else with some more knowledge help me out?

EDIT: Also as I stated this is a work computer, entirely hooked up through private servers, there is literally no local storage and I am not system admin and therefore am not able to reinstall Lion or set it up so that this feature works properly. It is simply not possible with our current configuration.

I replied, it is true, you do not wish to believe it, that is your problem. There is NO preference or option to turn it off. You don't want help, you just want to moan until someone lies and tells you there is a preference that doesn't exist. If you are so positive that there is then ring Apple and have it out with them and stop being so stubborn and looking like a fool.

There is no other way that I know of either, you've had the correct advice, use something that does not support Autosave (i.e. any version of MS Office) and delve into your backups for an earlier version of the file.

Well after doing only a few more minutes of research I found this:

So I would just like to say that as I expected, all three of you are not "the most knowledgable" sources of information on this topic. thank you. good day.

Post back when one of the likely problems (as stated in the article) arise. Good Day to you too.

Many of us knew this half-witted hack has been around for a long time, and would not recommend these type of potentially destructive hacks to our worse enemies, they are certainly not posted as 'help' here or the place would be a disaster.

Firstly note this was posted 6 to 7 months ago. Wow what a success it has been!!!

But first, a Word of Caution:

This is an experiment

And secondly, well if you bothered to read the warning label on this chunky hack well..............

Good luck, sounds like you will need it.

Good Day to you and your ridiculous attitude also.
